Advantage of roller compactor --the dry granulation machine

The spray-dried or frozen-dried powder of Western medicine or traditional Chinese medical extract is featured by non-uniform size and density, poor fluidity and easy layering. To make up for these shortages, granulation should be included as a key process. Only powder after granulation can be pressed, filled into capsules or packed better.
 
It is learned that dry granulator is the new-generation granulating machine after one-step granulating machine. It is pretty friendly to the environment and thus widely applied in pharmaceutical industry to process especially material which might decompose, lose effect or lump in the circumstance of high moisture or temperature.
 
 
During granulation, the dry powdery material (Western medicine or tradition Chinese medical extract) is mixed and then fed into the cone hopper. The material has certain amount of crystal water. An irregular-shape non-isometric conical auger rotates and feed material downwards. In this step, the auger generates pressure to compress the material, exhaust air and press the powder to sheets. Then the sheets are shredded and granulated in granulating system.
Advantage of dry granulation to compare with wet granulation?

Compared with wet granulation, dry granulation can apparently save energy. Its technique is pretty simple to avoid many challenges of GMP. The machine covers small area and thus the production cost is lower. It can be dismantled and cleaned easily and conveniently. The inner and outer sealing structure can prevent its electric box and driving parts from being damaged and contaminated by water during cleaning.

Besides, no additive or adhesive is needed in dry granulation. The end products have uniform size, high bulk density, good fluidity. They can be stored and transported conveniently. In addition, the products dissolution, porosity and specific surface area can be controlled easily. Water- or alcohol-insoluble drugs, antibiotics, heat-sensitive drugs or traditional Chinese medical extract which don’t have standard specific weight and cannot be mixed with adhesive or other excipients, must all be processed by dry granulation.

Why roller compactor dry granulation is better ?
Currently, dry granulator has been a mainstream of granulation industry. Some experts also express that dry granulating techniques will be improved gradually as dry granulation is more and more widely applied and higher and higher requirements on granulation are raised. Cleanness and flexible function will be the common goal in the industry. For one thing, totally enclosed dry granulating system can reduce dust pollution of production. For another thing, the equipment will be modular. Only few parts should be dismantled for quick cleaning of the machine. And auger and pressing roller can be changed quickly for different granulation goals.
 
Nowadays granulating machine can meet basic needs of pharmaceutical industry. But lacking investment in development and innovation still leads to some insufficiency of the equipment, including poor stability, high error rate, huge amount of dust, low end product rate, difficult cleaning and unstable pressure, etc.. However, it is foreseeable that application of new technologies can greatly increase granulating efficiency and quality of the granulating machines. And as pharmaceutical industry develops and national requirements on pharmaceutical quality also raise, granulator manufacturer should pay more attention to technical innovation to meet those granulation requirements and contribute to development of granulating industry.
